PEOPLE, we must unite! The survival of our country & future generations depends on making change.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, over 68% of Americans are overweight or obese. More than 18% of children are obese.  The Bogalusa Heart Study, started in 1972 & continuing through 2016, found that Heart Disease starts in childhood. According to autopsy studies, there have been over 560 deaths since 1972. 20% of those deaths were related to high blood pressure (hypertension) & high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia).

According to the Bogalusa study, 50% of the participating children are overweight or obese. Children who are obese are 8 times more likely to develop high blood pressure as adults. 77%  of individuals who were obese as children, developed obesity as an adult. Children born in 2000 have a 1 in 3 chance of getting Diabetes. African American & Latino children have 1 in 2 odds of developing this debilitating disease. 39% of obese youth have 2 or more cardiovascular risk factors; 52% have an increased risk of developing asthma. Between the ages of 5 & 10, lesions can begin to form on children’s arteries.

There is a direct correlation between poverty & the obesity/overweight epidemic. 9 of the 10 states with the highest rates of obesity are also the poorest in the country. Morbid obesity has shown the most striking rise among all chronic diseases. Along with the increase in human suffering & burden, healthcare costs also continue to rise, placing even more burden on families & our national economy.
